There are many challenges we face when trying to achieve a goal, some might be out of our control. However, with proper planning, realistic goals, and consistency, you can develop a strategy for success.
A study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology revealed that by the end of January, approximately 58% of people who set New Year's resolution goals have already abandoned their goal. It is stats like this that prove how imperative it is to consistently check in with our 7 Steps over the weeks leading up to your deadline and make any necessary changes to your plan in order to stay on track.
Studies show that when a goal is written down there is a much higher rate of success. With that in mind follow the steps below and physically write out your responses to each step. Once you have completed the first 6 steps you will then write your goal on a separate paper or sticky note to display it somewhere you will see daily (ex. taped to a mirror or on the fridge) as a constant reminder of your end goal.
Follow the 7 Steps to our goal setting guide to achieve your fitness, career, wellness, or personal goal:
Step #1 - Establish the primary goal and be extremely specific.
For your first step you will want to establish exactly what you are aiming to achieve, be very specific when writing this goal out. Your goal should be measurable in some way to ensure you can determine once it has been achieved.
Write out your responses to each step in this guide to improve your chances of successfully hitting your goal.
Step #2 - Deadline
There must be an established deadline date for your long-term goal to be achieved. By setting a deadline you create a sense of urgency that will help you maintain motivation to take action and stay committed. A deadline for your goal will also help you prioritize tasks and allocate your time more effectively.
Step #3 - Identify limitations
Next, write out any limitations you may encounter while pursuing your goal. Each limitation now becomes a micro-goal. By breaking your goal down into smaller components (micro-goals) it becomes more manageable and easier to digest.
Make a list of what exactly you will need to do in order to accomplish your larger goal.
Step #4 - Determine how to accomplish your
micro-goals
Once you have written out your micro-goals you can then determine what you will need to do, learn, sign up for, and/or develop to accomplish each of your micro-goals.
For example, if you are setting the goal to run a marathon, your micro-goals should include a clear breakdown of your training routine and schedule, a nutrition plan, a body maintenance schedule (massages/mobility work), race day game plan, and when to sign up for the race.
After completing Step 4 you will have a clear blueprint of what needs to be done to accomplish your goal.
Step #5 - Create a timeline for your micro-goals
Now that you have a clear understanding of the small steps needed to finish each micro-goal you can create an in-depth timeline that leads up to your deadline. Beside all of your listed micro-goals write a date or create a timeline for when to start and finish each one.
Step #6 - Visual reminder
Now that you have a written game plan for your resolution, write your big goal on a separate paper or sticky note and display it somewhere you will see daily. For example, taped to a mirror or on the fridge. This will give you a constant reminder to check in with how your micro-goals are progressing and provides motivation.
Step #7 - Adaption
Obstacles will arise as you pursue your long-term goal and adaptation is key! Whenever there is a speed-bump to your original plan, take a moment to re-evaluate your micro-goals and make any necessary changes. What you wrote down today for your timeline and micro-goals will most likely need to be adapted as you progress, so be pliable and don't quit!
